Types of Transfer Students

Lateral Transfers

Students who are either simultaneously enrolled in two or more equivalent institutions or are transferring from one institution to another institution of equivalence, such as transferring from one community college to another community college.

Upward Transfers

Students who transfer from a 2-year institution to a 4-year institution.

Reverse Transfers

Students who transfer from a 4-year institution to a 2-year institution. These students often will transfer back to a 4-year institution later on.

Vertical Transfers

Students who are simultaneously enrolled in both a 2-year and 4-year institution with the intent that the credits earned at the 2-year institution will eventually transfer over and count towards the degree being earned at the 4-year institution.
